A personal view of the world of winter sports

On this website you’ll find all kinds of features relating to skiing and snowboarding, mountain lifestyle, and the people who make the Alps such a special place.

Thanks for visiting!

This site contains a collection of journalism I’ve done over the past couple of seasons: features, interviews and guides, first published in a variety of newspapers and magazines.

Most of the pieces are about skiing, snowboarding, holidays in the snow or travelling in the mountains in winter – although you’ll find the odd summer story, too.

Focus is the Valais region, home to Switzerland’s highest peaks, the Four Valleys ski area and the resort of Verbier, where I am based.

The spectacular terrain has attracted some equally impressive spectator events. One of the most dramatic is the Xtreme Verbier, the climax of the Freeride World Tour.

Held each March, it features the world’s top freeriders skiing and snowboarding over cliffs and down the steep snowfields of a mountain once considered unskiable. You’ll find interviews with to athletes and other related stories under the freeriding category.

Speed skiing contains features on one of the other big events – the Speed Ski World Cup, held on the glacier on the 3,330-metre Mont-Fort. The discipline showcases the fast non-motorized form of travel on earth.

If you prefer gentler pleasures, check out the food & drink section – especially the items on cakes and chocolate, among the crowning glories of this beautiful part of the world.

Elsewhere you’ll find advice on travel to the ski areas, as well as tips on buying and renting equipment. Qualified guides and rescuers give insider advice on mountain awareness and safety.

You’ll also get glimpses behind the ski scenes, insights into resort life, and an idea of what it’s like to train to live and work here, under diary of a ski instructor course.

There’ll be more stories next season. Do come back!
